Question: What
costs more the doctor or the hospital?
Answer: As
you can see from the pie chart
here, in most cases your doctor bills will be smaller then
your hospital bill. Due to the rising cost of medical services
and the practice of "defensive
medicine", 97.3% of the time the hospital bill will be
your largest cost. In the great majority of cases, even in a
very normal delivery, your hospital bill will outdistance all
your bills.
Your hospital may tell you,
"We charge XYZ for the hospital portion of your
maternity." What do they mean by "hospital
portion"? In general they mean that since you're paying for
your doctor separately, the hospital will charge you for all the
"room and board" services they provide for mother and
the baby including overnight stays and all ordinary delivery
room services.

The hospital's no-frills "room and board" quote does
not include anything extra or out of the ordinary because no one
can predict the future. Doctors and hospitals commonly practice
"defensive medicine"
and order extensive tests and the medical procedures the tests
suggest at the slightest provocation to protect themselves from
malpractice suits. This increases cost.
If you or your baby require
special care, you will be charged more. All hospital extras
will cost you more. If you order something extra at McDonald's,
it costs you more!
If you deliver without any
complications, and you have a short labor, and neither mom or
baby need any special care, the hospital will charge you its
normal rate. But you will be charged more for anything outside
their normal maternity services, and be expected to pay for it.

Question: Why
does the hospital charge more for "extras"?
Answer: Hospitals
charge for extras because every birth is different. They can't predict
what may happen to mom or baby. The extras always cost more money no
matter where you go. Because it's like going to a restaurant, you pay
one price for the meal, and more for anything extra you order.
The same goes at the hospital. They will
bill you for every thing they do including bringing you an aspirin if
it's not included in their normal rate. You will be charged for any and
all extra services.
The longer you and or your baby stay in
the hospital, the more you will pay no matter what the hospital quoted

Question: My
hospital told me that my hospital stay would cost a certain amount. Does
that mean no matter what happens the price is the same?

Doctors and Hospitals
Question: My
OBGYN gave me pre-registration forms for the
hospital to fill out. Why does MaternityCard tell me not to pre-register
at the hospital?
Answer: MaternityCare
is not maternity insurance. Because you don't have maternity insurance
if you pre-register the hospital will most likely ask you to pay up
front for your entire delivery. You don't want to pay upfront because
